Google may be working on music store | preview | download

According to a report by the New York Times, Google is currently working on deploying their very own music store to compete head-on with Apple’s iTunes Music store and Amazon’s MP3 store. For the time being, Google’s music service only allows users to store their tunes in a cloud which can be accessed anywhere the user has internet connection.

Google may well launch the music store without the support of major record companies, although the tech giant is said to be close to a deal with EMI Music Group, which is incidentally the smallest of the major labels. Google will definitely face stiff competition if it wants this music store to materialise. Apple’s iTunes Music Store has been the number one retailer of music for many years and has pushed competitors like Walmart out of the online music business.

Part of iTunes success is due to its tight integration with iPhone and iPods, so Google will have quite a bit of work to do in order to steal Apple’s thunder and market share. The increasingly widespread adoption of Android will definitely help them
