Comparison - Apple iPhone 4S vs Apple iPhone 4 | preview | download

Your eyes are not deceiving you, the picture above you is the Apple iPhone 4S and the Apple iPhone 4 standing side by side. So the burning question remains, should you buy it? Read on to find out.

Physically, it is the same phone, the chassis and the button configurations are exactly where it was on the Apple iPhone 4. The only change from the Apple iPhone 4 to the Apple iPhone 4S is the weight – the latter is 3 grams heavier than its sibling.

It is still the same 3.5-inch Retina display on the Apple iPhone 4S, the same one on the Apple iPhone 4. It is still an oleophobic scratch-resistant screen and displays 640 x 960 pixels.

Just like the Apple iPhone 3G to the Apple iPhone 3GS, the changes are inside the smartphone, and right off the bat Apple has upgraded the A4 chipset on the Apple iPhone 4 to the dual-core A5 chipset on the Apple iPhone 4S, which Apple claims will deliver up to seven times faster graphics. Presumably, the Apple iPhone 4S will have much faster performance, and Apple is touting the Apple iPhone 4S for gamers.

Another important change is the CMDA + GSM connectivity on the Apple iPhone 4S, compared to the Apple iPhone 4 which either had CDMA or GSM connectivity. The Apple iPhone 4S is a world phone, meaning you will be able to use the local GSM networks here in Malaysia and CDMA networks in the US.

Data connectivity is also upgraded, the Apple iPhone 4S doubles the speed of HSPA connectivity against the Apple iPhone 4 – now the Apple iPhone 4S now has 14.4Mbps on the downlink. Both phones still do WiFi, WiFi hot spot functionality, and GPRS/EDGE. The Apple iPhone 4S gets a Bluetooth v4.0 receiver compared to the v2.1 on the Apple iPhone 4.

As for the operating systems, iOS has progressed from the iOS 4 to the iOS 5, which comes with features like the Notification Centre, iReminder, iMessages, Twitter integration, and more ways to edit or touch up your photos. Both phones are upgradable to iOS5. However the Apple iPhone 4S has an ace in its sleeve - Siri, the voice recognition personal assistant. Reviewers have been impressed by what it is able to understand and respond. For example, if you ask Siri about the weather in Kuala Lumpur, it will answer by showing you the weather app. Then if you ask Siri "Where are the good Thai restaurants there". Siri responds with a list of restaurants. Siri 'knows' that you are still referring to Kuala Lumpur.

Apple upgraded the Apple iPhone 4's five-megapixel camera to an eight-megapixel camera on the Apple iPhone 4S, which is loaded with features like backlight illumination, and an image signal processor that enables face detection and improved white balance. And the camera's sensor is much faster this time around and will only take 1.1 seconds to snap the first shot, and half a second for the next. Video recording is bumped up from 720p to 1080p as well.

The 16GB and 32GB Apple iPhone 4S are priced at $199 and $299, the same price point as the Apple iPhone 4 during its release. With that in mind, we assume the Apple iPhone 4S will be priced at RM2190 and RM2590 as well. The 64GB is a new addition to the Apple iPhone 4S catalogue and is priced at $499, which is a 40 percent difference between the 64GB and 32GB.

Despite the initial 'letdown', the Apple iPhone 4S has impressed users with its hardware upgrades as well as the Siri voice recognition software. But will it be an obvious purchase? Yes and no. Sure there are plenty of new hardware features to play with, but the Apple iPhone 4S is an upgrade not a redesign. Apple fans will have no qualms we suspect, but if you are in a tight budget, it is best to stick to your Apple iPhone 4. Local telcos are offering discounts on the older device too.

However if this is your first iPhone or you been holding out with your iPhone 3GS, the Apple iPhone 4S would be a sensible choice.
